Florida Mulch  Mulch is a good gardener’s not so secret weapon. And if you want a healthy, beautiful garden that requires less of your time for maintenance, but still maintains it splendor. Using and choosing the right type of mulch is a great place to start, to upkeep a beautiful Florida garden.  Not only is it easy to use, but it helps prevent weeds, conserves water and did we mention, it improves the aesthetics of your garden. What is Mulch?

Mulch is an organic material (like tree bark, wood chips, straw or hay) that is spread over the surface of the soil or cover a plant to enrich and lock in the moisture.  When mulch breaks down it provides vital nutrients that enhance the soil’s chemical make-up. Here are some other interesting benefits of mulch:

  • Control or prevents growth of weeds
  • Prevents soil compaction
  • Mulch can reduce need to water by 25 to 50%
  • Improves soil tilth

Different Types of Mulch

Mulch can be any material used to enrich soil, but there are common types like bark, wood chips, and straw and hay. Decaying leaves are used – and some people get an extra use out of their Christmas trees in the winter.

Bark Mulch

Bark Mulch is one of the most common. Bark Mulch does a great job of locking in the moisture and usually stays where you put it – which is always a good thing. It’s also a neat and attractive option. The key with bark mulch is to no use too much. Excess water can become trapped and lead to fungus in your mulch.  2-3” is recommended.

Wood Chips

Wood chips like bark mulch do a great job of locking in moisture and improving the aesthetics of your garden.  Wood chips are available in an assortment of colors and different types of wood, which you gives you much flexibility when designing your garden.

Straw and Hay Mulches

Straw and Hay are inexpensive alternatives and are both very easy to apply. However, because of the lack of weight, can sometimes drift or be blown away. With that said – many homeowner prefer the more natural look of straw or hay mulches. It’s your garden and it is totally up to you.
